The Artists of Go Figure!

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 2. February 2011 01:25

Go Figure! Featuring the Human Figure in Art is our upcoming exhibition featuring the figure. Our artists for the month will be Eduarda Sousa, Marie Timbers, Jason Kozlowski and Elizabeth Dinkel. Below are their stories.

Marie Timbers

I was born and raised in the Toronto area and educated at the University of Toronto. I have worked as a Physical Therapist for over 35 years. Painting has been my passion and right brain escape for 20 of those years. My arts education had included courses at the Toronto School of Art and the Haliburton School of Fine Art.

In 2007 I bought what had once been the Plainfield Grist Mill and General Store on the Moira River and I set up Grist Mill Studio. I primarily paint in acrylic, mixed media and collage. I often start a painting with the abstract laying on and scraping off of paint. Images appear and are further developed into impressionist themes and subject matter.

As an artist I am always looking to challenge myself - the human figure is a relatively new adventure for me. My academic education in anatomy and human kinetics and years of "handling" the human body has provided me with an intellectual view of the figure. But we are so much more than our anatomical parts - we express our emotions and intentions through postures, movement and gesture. It is my hope that I have captured these moments in time in subtle ways that will be thought provoking and somewhat mysterious.

Jason Kozlowski

Jason studied painting at 'Tyler School of Art' in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Rome, Italy, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He was the lead instructor of the 'Mural Arts Program' in Philadelphia, and taught art education in several schools within New York City and Oakland, California.

He is an artist who explores the deeper facets of humanity through his richly worked and beautifully painted portraits. Using oil paints as his predominant medium, he works with subjects of varying ages and backgrounds to explore both the innate strength of children and the vulnerability of adults. His intense portraits strive to capture the true essence of one human qualities, moving beyond the superficial and drawing in the viewer with their inventive colouration and unique brushwork. The portraits have a confrontational aspect, gazing or staring out at the viewer as they are being looked upon.

Elizabeth Dinkel

I have been doing art since I was a child. I attended Western Tech. in Toronto in the art program after which I took night classes at OCA and Central Tech. In Belleville I took many classes through Loyalist College. I have also attended several open studio life figure drawing classes at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. From time to time I exhibit some of my art at Dinkel's Restaurant in Belleville. I have also exhibited in the Belleville Library Parrott Gallery shows in the past. I have my own large studio in downtown Belleville and I encourage other artists to join me in drawing live models once a week. My art is also in private collections in Switzerland and Itlay. I am a member of the Quinte Arts Association.

Artist Statement

I have enjoyed drawing portraits for 40 years. Young, old, male or female all fascinate me. We are all so different and getting a likeness is a real challenge. I enjoy acrylics, oils and pencile but I prefer pastels above all. I love watching the person come to life on my paper right before my eyes.

Eduarda Sousa

Born in the Island of Sao Miguel, Azores, Eduarda spent her formative years surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and lived a simple existence of farming, learning the traditional crafts and roles of the women around her. Eduarda immigrated to Toronto in 1973. The middle girl of a family of 8 children, she was the first in her family to go to University and study art, quite unusual for a girl from a traditional Portuguese background.

Eduarda graduated from the Ontario College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Arts and went on to University of Guelph where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She has been exhibiting her work since the 1980's being influenced by Rembrandt, Cezanne and Lucien Freud along the way. She has worked with children from kindergarten to grade 8 in the public school system, teaching art and organizing recycled fashion projects for fashion shows by the students.

Eduarda is an oil painter who enjoys the tactile, sensual and rich nature of her medium. She paints both in Toronto and in her soon to be full time residence in Prince Edward County, where she has restored and converted an old barn to a studio/ gallery and named it the The Driveshed. She uses herself as subject matter and paints what her gaze falls upon. She aims to be truthful to her visual perception, without stylistic embellishments or personal dramatics.
