Revisiting Our Artists - Laurie Near

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 16. February 2012 20:42

Born in Chatham, Ontario and currently residing in the Quinte region, Laurie Near has held a life-long interest in the visual arts. Imaginative compositions, symbolism and a strong sense of design characterize Laurie’s work. Her technique often includes application of several different layers of acrylic glaze to create intensely vibrant colours and jewel-like tones. Her whimsical, somewhat illustrative style has become increasingly visceral, reflective of a growing interest in creating personal, introspective pieces concerned with interior psychological landscapes and in-depth explorations of the human form..

Laurie’s formal education includes degrees from the University of Guelph and University of Western Ontario. She has taught several Visual Arts courses at the secondary school level and is a member of the Belleville Art Association, the Quinte Arts Council, the Acrylic Painter’s Society of Ontario and Visual Arts Ontario. Her artwork hangs in a number of galleries and in private collections across Canada, the U.S.A. and the U.K.
