Worldly Impressions: Kevin Edwards

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 17. May 2012 21:45

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Kevin Edwards

It’s what you do with the paint.

This is the simplest answer I can give to the question; What is painting about?  The question can generate some very complicated answers. So put simply, I believe that whatever else you do: ‘do something with the paint!'

The language of my painting is based on words like line, shape, form, structure, space, light, tone harmony, warm and cool values, plein air, alla prima, enhanced light effect, marks, blending and texture. However I consider these actions to only have full impact, if the paint is used in such a way as to ‘deliver the message’.

Having made this statement, my paintings are also a response to experience. I choose subjects that take me by surprise, and enjoy the beauty of the world around me, often focusing on the visual atmosphere, light and mood on landscape, seascapes cityscapes, interiors, and still life.

My work comes from an optimistic view, sometimes tinged with more subtle moods and atmospheres, painted in a way which aims to balance the formal structure of the work with a freedom of expression on the paint surface, as previously mentioned. When one of these qualities of formal and expressive are over emphasised, I feel a painting looses more than it gains.

I have endeavoured to study the formal aspects of painting and over the years, this has resulted in a series of ‘mini revelations’ which has led to an increased ability to articulate my responses to my chosen subjects, and manage the balance between knowing how to make the painting work, and intuitively finding my way.

The methods I paint in are Plein Air and Alla Prima. I also construct studio paintings which are interpretations of places from a distance. This offers the opportunity to select and decide what is important without the immediacy and urgency of working in the landscape.

In my drawing of the landscape and natural objects (including the drawing in the paintings) I look for the ‘inscape’, the underlying structure. This is based on an idea of underlying spirals in nature and all things organic. It also lends itself to the idea that everything is connected in cyclical movement; for instance, the way water moves through the landscape; evaporating from the sea into the sky and falls as rain once again, on to the land, then flowing as rivers back to the sea and so on.

I have also studied arts management and worked as an arts manager for a number of years. I have been very interested in creativity and management and my understanding of painting and creativity has informed my arts management projects, and my knowledge of management has influenced my creativity. I believe each practice compliments the other.

She is as Unique as a Painting

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 10. May 2012 01:15

Once again the time has come to celebrate our mothers and all they've done for us.

They've been there; from our infancy to our childhood, to our teen years and beyond. Do you remember the band-aids that came with a kiss? How about the life lessons and her infallible (and sometimes maddening) ability to always be right.

Always remember her patience, her loyalty and her love for her children. Soon it will be time to celebrate these attributes and everything that makes your mom amazing.

At ArtPlus we're celebrating Mother's Day with our delicate spring gallery. This week you can see aspects of her fun-loving personality in our variety of jewellery displays.

Stuck for gift ideas? What about the unique necklaces and bracelets we have on display? Or how about one of our stunning paintings done by local artists? These memorable gifts will prove your affection again and again, each time they're viewed.

They're an excellent way to show how much you care in a unique and inspiring way. Or perhaps you're looking for an experience instead of a gift to share with your mom this Mother's Day. Why not share some beauty this week and bring her to Gallery ArtPlus for a special day.

Art is a beautiful thing to share with those you love. This Mother's Day, give the gift of art.

This Mother's Day, show your love, show how much you care.

Worldly Impressions: Janice Teare

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 5. May 2012 00:41

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Janice Tear

Janice takes a very uncontemporary approach to contemporary art. In her view, much of what is labeled “contemporary” is often focused on the ugly, tawdry, disrupting or disturbing the sensibilities of the viewer. Instead, Ms. Teare uses contemporary techniques and materials to create art that aims to be interesting, meditative and calming.

Janice tries to induce a pause, to use her art to create reflective moments of calm, to motivate the viewer to “go placidly amidst the noise and haste”. Her art is immersive. In true contemporary fashion, she distils elements down to their essentials and then layers these same elements to capture and hold the viewer. The effect is much like gazing into a pool of water….deceptively straightforward but fuelling hours of study.

Her works tend towards large-scale as these are needed to immerse and hold for a calming effect. Her preferred materials are acrylic on canvas, which she likes for their flexibility and adaptability. “Acrylics can be thinned to emulate water colours or used to build and create textures that exceed the capacities of oil-based materials,” she notes. “The approach is very versatile.”

Her focus on contemplative moods and large scale works appeal to a wide variety of corporate clients and collectors. Her art is favoured for corporate boardrooms and meeting facilities or by collectors seeking to fill large spaces and to create specific personalities for their space. Of particular note, her work has hung in the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto and she has had the ‘pleasure’ of having a painting stolen from a gallery in Etobicoke. As she puts it: “artists are typically long gone before their work is considered valuable enough to warrant thievery!” One can only hope the thief found peace.

Worldly Impressions: Jim Woolley

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 25. April 2012 20:25

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Jim Woolley

Jim Woolley is a painter of landscape and a sculptor in stone and clay with a studio at Maker Heights on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall. Since visiting West Penwith on a painting trip in the winter of 2004/05 the main body of work has been en plein air studies of coastal Cornwall. Some recent work has been influenced by a visit to the McMichael collection near Toronto in 2010.

In painting the aim is to create, through direct observation, a representation of being in a landscape, in a season, at a time of day, and to communicate the uniqueness of each painting event. Sculpture is inspired by the human figure and forms found in nature such as beach forms, and seeks to evoke an interdependence of these two sources.

Worldly Impressions: Evelyn Rapin

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Evelyn Rapin

Most of my work displays a certain rawness of composition. I prefer to reveal some of the basic mark making of the artistic process to enhance the expressive nature of the piece. Movement is another element that I generally try to incorporate within each composition. Exploration and the unexpected are two more important factors behind my artistic approach—which means that I am not tied down to a pre-conceived, planned image—this makes the process and the end product interesting and somewhat unpredictable for me.

Artistic influences are numerous but they include Larry Rivers, Franz Kline and Robert Rauschenberg. My abstract work is frequently (but not always) inspired by music—it contains musical ideas without literal imagery. I paint still life and other subject matter in between my abstract paintings, but I spend my time breaking down the realism of the subject matter. I hope to encourage the viewer to use his or her imagination to interpret each painting.

Worldly Impressions: Tamara Mazurenko

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Tamara Mazurenko

For several years I have focused on painting still lives and have been particularly interested in flowers, because of their vibrant fragility and sensuality – and most of all their colour! It is colour that really excites me and makes me want to paint, the desire to understand continually how different colours work with and relate to each other and can create their own unique world within a painting.

More recently I have also been drawn to painting landscape and love the expansiveness and chaotic-ness of nature in contrast to the more controllable and intimate atmosphere of interior domestic space.

Worldly Impressions Spotlight: Giancarlo Piccin

"Gina" by Giancarlo Piccin

Giancarlo Piccin was born in Toronto, Ontario, May 29, 1959, to Italian immigrants Basilio and Lidia. He is the middle child of three.

Giancarlo’s mother recalls the day in which she discovered that her son had artistic talent.  “We had returned to Italy and arrived in a small town close to where I was born. Rather than a conventional taxi, we decided to take a horse and carriage back to my parents’ home; this ride left two and a half year old Giancarlo in awe. When the family arrived at their destination, the young man demanded a pen and paper, and immediately drew out in detail the horse, carriage and driver.  Upon seeing his grandson’s work, Piccin’s grandfather wept with joy, asking in disbelief how a child, who could barely talk, could have such ability.

“As long as I can remember, I’ve been the centre of attention when it came to art. I was the student asked to design the billboards or yearbook covers in school.  While the other students would work on Math or English assignments, I would be drawing in my notebook or painting something. For me there was no ‘choice’, it’s a part of me, it’s who I am; more than anything it is a gift that I need to share.”

Giancarlo spent much of his free time with his friends on the streets of Toronto,  surrounded by drugs, alcohol, gambling, and calling himself “John” to fit in.  During a teachers’ strike, he found work at a Sicilian pool hall, eventually running the place, while fitting in classes whenever possible.  Some shady characters frequented the joint, gambling away their businesses and homes in a secret room. “We paid off two cops every month – they would warn us if a bust was coming down from the station; we would use a light switch hidden under the counter to warn the players to clear out.”

In Grade 12, he was being encouraged to pursue art in post-secondary school. Giancarlo used the excuse of working on his portfolio to skip classes and continue working at the pool hall, feeding his two newest vices – beer and pot.

Giancarlo sold his first painting: to the VP of The Toronto Dominion Bank.  After taking the elevator to the top floor of one of the TD Bank buildings, and being invited into a spacious office with an incredible view, he surprised the VP by insisting, true to his street-wise background, on being paid cash.

Piccin was accepted into Ontario College of Art at the age of eighteen.  During his first year, he found himself  behind the other students due to his lack of formal training and his, comparatively, young age.  But after studying under the likes of Fred Hagan, Peter Mau, Mario Polidori and John Inglis, he soon found his stride.

After graduating in 1981, he was accepted into the Fine Art Program at York University, but he decided to decline the invitation to continue working solely on his art. During this time he had several shows, travelled to Jamaica and Mexico.

Giancarlo’s freelance work in illustration, and continued work on his fine art lead to an exhibition of his work at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery.  After extended travels to Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica, he returned home to take a full-time job as a graphic designer to earn enough money for more travel.

"Rebel" by Giancarlo Piccin

On a trip to Italy to visit family, Piccin wanted to spend some time in Venice: “I planned a trip with a cousin who lived nearby.  A local offered to show us around.  He claimed that it would be possible to see Venice in “una giornata” – ‘one day’.  Resulting in a successful exhibition - “A Day in Venice”, based entirely upon what he saw that day.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for the Italian High Renaissance.  It may be the fact that I’m a Canadian of Italian heritage that draws me toward this period or because I find the impeccable craftsmanship and aesthetic quality of their work appealing.”

Piccin’s artistic direction changed following that trip to Italy; his style now reflects a maturity that explores the possibilities of architectural details and man-made objects as subject matter, striving to capture light with paint.

“Ultimately, I investigate the relationship between people and their surroundings. My work usually begins with an abstract painting.  I then explore the possibilities of architecture or people as subject matter.  By using minimal brush strokes on successive layers, I encourage the viewer to connect the missing links to form a complete image.  Occasionally, I include found objects to further explore this relationship.”

Giancarlo believes that the challenge for any contemporary artist is to see the world through new eyes.  “It is important to me that an artist’s work reflects his/her time.  Whether it is through the use of contemporary themes, techniques and/or mediums.”

The challenge is to present your generation with a new vision … Equipped with a good understanding of the past and present art scene, Piccin continues to try and meet this challenge in an effort to represent his generation.

Piccin, now an internationally collected artist, resides in the beautiful Heart Lake area of Brampton with his wife and son, also named Giancarlo.

New Sale Items - by Paula Vandermey

by Gallery Artplus Administrator 1. March 2012 21:02

With the beginning of March comes not only a new month but some new sale items in our gallery gift shop.

Mushroom Goblet Set and paperweights by Paula Vandermey

The prices on these items have been reduced for the coming of spring! The Mushroom Goblet Set makes for a great wind chime in the spring breeze. It has been reduced to a price of $370.00.

The multi-coloured paperweights have been reduced in price too, selling for only $100.00 each!

Paula studied glass at Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada. She also earned a BFA (Hons) Glass at the University Sunderland in the United Kingdom. She has worked with a diverse group of internationally established artists, allowing her to diversify and develop her work in other countries.

Paula explores the technical process of three - dimensional sculpture sand casting, hot glass, and kiln casting. She combines mixed mediums and found objects as part of her creative process to create tactile, erotic sculptures.

Paula's work has always shown passion towards the human form as well as a fascination with the emotions which animate it. For someone interacting with one of these sculptures, the beauty and lyricism combine with an energy and tension which gives a dramatic quality to her work.

Paula states, "One can appreciate my sculptures as a celebration of creation, regeneration and mortality. I create my own cultural identity in which the visual codes of my subconscious become reanimated. I creatively reconstruct the past and redefine its meaning. My art gives from the soul and entices the audience to interact and unravel the mysteries of who we are as human beings. Touch is as revealing as vision, and when this exchange happens the audience can correlate a story unique to them."
